Where Does Vortex Store Mods? Find Every Folder

Cant find where Vortex stores mods? Don't worry we have all your answers

Vortex does not keep everything in one folder. It normally uses separate locations for downloaded mod archives, installed/staged mod files, deployed files inside the game, and Vortex’s own settings data.

If you only want to find your installed mods: open the game in Vortex and look for its Mod Staging Folder in that game’s storage/preferences settings. For downloaded ZIP, 7z or RAR archives, check the global Downloads Folder.

Vortex 2.x changed parts of the interface in 2026, so older guides telling you to always use Settings → Mods may not match what you see. In current Vortex 2 builds, game-specific storage options can appear under that game’s Preferences.

The Four Vortex Locations You Need to Know

What it contains Where to look
Downloaded mod archives Vortex Downloads Folder
Installed/extracted mod files Mod Staging Folder for that game
Files currently exposed to the game Game folder after deployment
Vortex settings, profiles and metadata Usually the Vortex data folder under your user AppData

Where Are Vortex Downloaded Mods Stored?

The Downloads Folder stores the archives Vortex downloads from Nexus Mods, such as ZIP, 7z and RAR files. Vortex uses one overall download location with game-specific subfolders inside it.

Older default installations commonly used a path under your Windows user AppData folder, but the important point is that the location is configurable. Do not assume the default path is still being used on your PC.

In Vortex, open the download/storage settings and read the path shown for Downloads Folder. That path is the authoritative answer for your installation.

Where Are Installed Vortex Mods Stored?

Installed mods live in the Mod Staging Folder. This contains the extracted files Vortex manages before deployment.

In older Vortex 1.x guides, this was usually found under Settings → Mods. Vortex 2.x has moved some game-specific options, and current users may instead find the staging-folder setting under the managed game’s Preferences.

A quick way to avoid hunting through folders is to use Vortex’s own option to open a mod or its staging location in the file manager where available.

What Is the Difference Between Downloads and the Staging Folder?

They are not duplicates doing the same job.

  • The Downloads Folder contains the original compressed archives you downloaded.
  • The Mod Staging Folder contains the extracted, installed version Vortex manages.
  • The game folder receives deployed files or links according to the deployment method used for that game.

This is why a heavily modded game can consume more disk space than the download total alone suggests.

Where Are Vortex Settings and Profiles Stored?

Vortex also stores its own configuration data separately from your downloads and staged mods. On Windows, older and current Vortex installations commonly use a user-data location under %APPDATA%\Vortex for settings and metadata.

This folder is not the same thing as your mod staging folder. Moving your downloads or staged mods does not necessarily move Vortex’s own settings database.

Can You Move the Vortex Mod Staging Folder?

Yes, but move it through Vortex rather than dragging the folder manually in File Explorer.

Nexus support guidance repeatedly warns that manually moving a staging folder can leave Vortex pointing at the old location. Let Vortex perform or register the move so it knows where the managed files went.

Depending on the game and deployment method, the staging folder may also need to be on the same drive as the game. If Vortex recommends a location or refuses a cross-drive path, follow the app’s suggestion rather than forcing it.

Can You Delete the Download Folder to Save Space?

You can remove old archives when you are certain you no longer need them, but do not confuse that with uninstalling a mod. Deleting an archive from the Downloads Folder does not automatically remove the installed files from the staging folder.

Likewise, do not manually delete deployed files from the game directory unless you understand exactly what Vortex is managing. Use Vortex’s normal remove, purge or deployment controls so its state stays in sync.

Where Does Vortex 2 Store Mods?

As of Vortex 2.x, the underlying idea is still the same: downloads and staged mods are separate. The main difference for many users is the interface. Nexus Mods released Vortex 2.0 in May 2026 and the current 2.x branch continues to evolve, so screenshots from older Vortex 1.x tutorials may no longer match.

If you cannot find the old Settings → Mods page, open the managed game and check its Preferences for the staging-folder path. The download location remains a separate global setting.

Quick Answer

If you are trying to locate a particular mod, start with the Mod Staging Folder. If you are trying to locate the file you originally downloaded from Nexus Mods, use the Downloads Folder. If you are troubleshooting files that are actually affecting the game, inspect Vortex’s deployment state rather than assuming the staging folder is the same as the game directory.

The safest rule is simple: find and move Vortex-managed folders from inside Vortex whenever possible. That prevents the app’s database and the actual files on disk from drifting apart.
